Amit Shah:Government Moves New Bill to Dismiss Jailed Minister
The Centre introduced three bills to allow dismissal of jailed leaders after 30 days behind bars. These include ministers, Chief Ministers, or even the Prime Minister, if detained under serious criminal charges. The move follows criticism over Arvind Kejriwal running Delhi’s administration from prison without submitting his resignation.Amit Shah said BJP never faced such a situation, hinting at Kejriwal’s defiance as unprecedented behaviour.
The government claimed the step was essential to maintain integrity and public faith in political leadership. The bills are now under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee amidst loud protests from opposition benches.PM Modi strongly supported the bill, calling it necessary to stop governance from jail by accused leaders. He cited recent incidents where jailed leaders continued functioning, which “shattered constitutional propriety” and public expectations.Speaking from Bihar, Modi compared this new bill to rules applicable even to junior government employees.
Rahul Gandhi Slams the Bill as Authoritarian Overreach
Rahul Gandhi fiercely criticised the bill, calling it an attempt to drag India backward into autocratic rule.
He claimed the ruling party uses agencies like ED, CBI, and I-T to crush opposition leaders unfairly.Gandhi accused the Modi government of weaponizing majority power to silence dissenting voices within democratic institutions repeatedly. He said the new legislation could become a dangerous tool to destabilize elected state governments arbitrarily.According to Gandhi, the bill reflects BJP’s fear of losing control and rising resistance from regional parties.
