The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday strongly countered Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the government over the India–US trade deal. The party initiated a substantive motion against him in the Lok Sabha. If the Speaker admits the motion, the House will hold a debate followed by a compulsory vote. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey submitted the notice and accused the Congress leader of serious misconduct.
In the notice, Dubey alleged that Gandhi engaged with foreign organisations such as the Soros Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and USAID. He also claimed that Gandhi travelled to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the United States to take part in activities that harmed India’s interests. Dubey further accused Gandhi of using Parliament to make unverified allegations against institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He said these claims lacked evidence and damaged the credibility of constitutional bodies.
Dubey described Gandhi’s conduct as unethical and accused him of being part of what he called a “thuggery gang” working to destabilise India from within. He argued that Gandhi’s actions inside and outside Parliament harmed national interests and required serious discussion. Speaking to reporters, Dubey demanded the cancellation of Gandhi’s Lok Sabha membership. He also called for a lifetime ban on Gandhi from contesting elections. However, government sources said they have not decided on moving a privilege motion. They added that authorities may remove unauthenticated remarks from Gandhi’s speech from the official records.

BJP Pushes for Rahul Gandhi’s Permanent Ban, Claims Plot to Destabilise Nation
The Congress rejected the BJP’s move and called it an attempt to divert attention. Party leader K C Venugopal said the BJP adopted a defensive strategy after Gandhi presented facts before the nation. He argued that the government should respond directly instead of targeting Gandhi through procedural measures. Substantive motions rarely appear in the Lok Sabha. In 1997, the House admitted one regarding the political situation in Uttar Pradesh and the role of the then Governor.
During the Budget discussion on Wednesday, Gandhi accused the government of compromising national interests in the trade deal with the United States. He claimed that India yielded on tariffs and allowed unrestricted data flow to the US without data localisation safeguards. He also alleged that the government avoided source code disclosure rules and granted a 20-year tax holiday. According to Gandhi, these decisions surrendered control over digital trade regulations and valuable national assets.
