    Jaishankar

The Union government has significantly enhanced the security of External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar in light of recent threats and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. As part of this upgrade, officials have added an additional bulletproof vehicle to his convoy to strengthen his protection during national travel. Dr. Jaishankar currently enjoys ‘Z’ category security provided by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which includes a dedicated team of armed commandos. This new security measure ensures heightened vigilance and safety for one of India’s key foreign policy leaders.

Intelligence agencies recently conducted a threat assessment that prompted the government to review and tighten security arrangements for several high-profile individuals. Based on the assessment, officials concluded that Dr. Jaishankar, due to his central role in foreign affairs, required enhanced protection. In October last year, the government had already upgraded his security from ‘Y’ to ‘Z’ category. At that time, the CRPF had taken over responsibility for his security from the Delhi Police. Since then, a team of over a dozen armed CRPF personnel has been providing round-the-clock protection during his movements and stays across the country.

The CRPF currently secures more than 210 VIPs, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, the Dalai Lama, and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The decision to further bolster Jaishankar’s security follows India’s firm military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which intensified tensions with Pakistan. The Ministry of Home Affairs oversees the allocation of security based on threat perception, extending protection to key government figures, judiciary members, celebrities, religious leaders, and occasionally civilians. This move underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding national leaders amid evolving security challenges.
