Sheikh Hasina’s Death Sentence Sparks Concern

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor called Sheikh Hasina’s death penalty a deeply troubling development on Monday. He expressed disappointment over the special tribunal’s decision to sentence her in absentia. Tharoor stressed that a fair trial requires the accused to defend themselves properly. He said delivering a death verdict without proper representation raises serious ethical concerns.

    Bangladesh Tribunal Issues Verdict

A special tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced former Prime Minister Hasina to death for alleged crimes against humanity. The tribunal also handed a similar punishment to former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. The charges relate to the violent student protests that took place last year. Hasina, who fled to India after her ouster, was not present during the proceedings. The International Crimes Tribunal delivered the judgment despite her absence.

Sheikh Hasina Rejects Charges As Political

Sheikh Hasina dismissed the accusations as biased and politically driven in a statement from Delhi. She criticised the tribunal for functioning under an unelected interim government lacking democratic legitimacy. Hasina stated that the verdict reflects attempts by extremist elements to eliminate her politically. She challenged the interim government to present the case before the International Criminal Court. She asserted she is ready to face accusations in a lawful and transparent process.
