US Ends Automatic EAD Extension For Migrants
The US Department of Homeland Security has announced that migrants filing EAD renewals on or after October 30, 2025, will no longer get automatic extensions. The decision will affect thousands of foreign workers, including a large number of Indians. However, EADs extended before October 30 will remain valid under the old rule. The new policy aims to increase background checks and strengthen national security measures.

Stricter Screening For Migrants Under New Rule
The Trump administration said the new rule would involve deeper vetting and verification of applicants. It replaces the Biden-era rule that allowed immigrants to work up to 540 days after their EAD expired. The earlier system applied to those who filed renewals on time and had matching eligibility categories. DHS clarified that limited exceptions would remain for TPS-related employment documentation. The department emphasized that the reform would help detect fraud and identify individuals with harmful intent.
USCIS Advises Timely EAD Renewal
USCIS Director Joseph Edlow called the move a “common-sense measure,” adding that working in the US is a privilege, not a right. He urged immigrants to file EAD renewals at least 180 days before expiry to avoid job interruptions. USCIS warned that delays in filing could cause temporary employment lapses. An EAD serves as proof that an individual is legally authorized to work in the US for a specific period.
H-1B Visa Fee Hike And State Measures
In September, the Trump administration raised the H-1B visa fee to $100,000 to ensure only highly skilled workers enter the US. The policy does not apply to those already in the country changing visa status, such as F-1 to H-1B. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis directed universities to prioritize hiring American citizens instead of foreign workers. These measures reflect the administration’s broader push to tighten immigration and protect domestic employment opportunities.
