Amid growing pressure from the US to halt its Russian oil imports or risk heavy tariffs, India on Monday firmly pushed back, delivering a strong and unapologetic message to Washington: enough is enough. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) openly criticized what it described as “unjustified and unreasonable” attempts to single out New Delhi, while also pointing out that both the US and the European Union maintain their own trade relationships with Russia.

It all began with Trump’s boastful assertions over the India-Pakistan flare-up in May, claiming he had single-handedly negotiated a ceasefire. But in a rare, outright dismissal of a US President’s remarks, New Delhi categorically denied any such involvement. Parliament was also told in no uncertain terms that there was no phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump to bring an end to the four-day conflict. The public rebuttal signalled that New Delhi would not let political grandstanding and misinformation from Washington go unchecked.

Now, Trump has accused India of helping to bankroll Russia’s war in Ukraine. He warned that beginning August 7, the U.S. will impose a 25% tariff on imports from India, and will escalate penalties further unless India stops importing deeply discounted Russian crude—which now makes up about one-third of India’s total oil supply. India, however, has rejected the accusation outright. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a firm rebuttal, stating that India’s oil trade is based solely on national interest and aimed at securing affordable energy for its 1.4 billion citizens. India also pointed out the double standards of the U.S. and European nations, many of whom have continued indirect trade with Russia in various forms.
