BCCI’s Directive for Kohli and Rohit

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to resume playing domestic cricket to stay eligible for ODI selection. Both players have retired from Tests and T20Is, leaving ODIs as their only active format. With growing discussions about their match fitness, the board emphasized that domestic participation is mandatory. Ahead of the South Africa ODI series, their possible inclusion in the Vijay Hazare Trophy has drawn major attention.

Rohit Confirms Domestic Participation, Kohli Yet to Decide

According to The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) about his availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Kohli, however, has not yet confirmed his participation in the domestic one-day tournament. BCCI sources revealed that both players were told they must prove match readiness through domestic cricket. Previously, following India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat, both had played Ranji Trophy matches under a similar directive.

Domestic Fitness and Future Selection Plans

Rohit’s commitment is evident as he has even offered to participate in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament starting November 26. This proactive approach underlines his intent to maintain match sharpness and secure a place in future ODI squads. BCCI officials view such domestic participation as crucial for players seeking selection for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Ajit Agarkar Reiterates Importance of Playing

Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar has repeatedly stressed the value of domestic cricket for all available players. He noted that continuous domestic play keeps players sharp and match-ready, especially during long breaks. The board believes this policy ensures competitiveness and readiness among senior players.

    Recent Performance Highlights

Both Rohit and Kohli recently returned for the ODI series against Australia after the ICC Champions Trophy. Rohit delivered an outstanding performance with a half-century and a century, earning the Player of the Match title. Kohli, meanwhile, showcased his form in the final match, scoring 74 runs in a dead rubber encounter. Their recent displays have reignited discussions about their continued relevance and potential inclusion in India’s 2027 World Cup plans.
