Google is moving closer to turning Gemini into a hands-on assistant that can complete tasks directly on Android phones. New details discovered in the beta version 17.4 of the Google app suggest the company is testing a feature called “screen automation,” which could let Gemini place orders, book rides, and interact with supported apps on behalf of users.
According to a report by 9to5Google, an APK teardown of the beta build revealed internal references to a tool named “Get tasks done with Gemini,” codenamed bonobo. The feature aims to transform Gemini from a question-answering assistant into an on-screen agent that can follow steps inside apps, select options, confirm actions, and complete forms automatically. However, Google plans to limit the capability to select apps at launch. Google has also added safety warnings within the beta. The company notes that Gemini may make mistakes and reminds users that they remain responsible for actions performed through automation. Users will be able to pause the process and take manual control whenever needed.

Android Gemini automation adds privacy controls and smarter AI features
Privacy notices reveal that trained reviewers may check screenshots from automated interactions when users enable activity tracking. Google says these reviews help improve performance and warns users not to share passwords, payment details, or sensitive information in Gemini chats. The company also advises users to avoid screen automation during emergencies or critical tasks.
The beta code also points to another feature called wasabi, linked to “Likeness,” which connects to 3D avatars already used in Android XR and Google Meet. Early signs suggest users will control and manage their digital likeness through Gemini, with access limited to the account owner.
These updates show Google actively preparing Gemini for a bigger role in daily Android use. If Google releases the feature widely, screen automation could reshape app interactions by letting Gemini perform actions instead of only offering suggestions. Google has not announced a release timeline yet.
