Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is all set to make history as the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) and the second Indian to travel to space after Rakesh Sharma’s legendary 1984 mission aboard the Soviet Soyuz spacecraft. The Axiom-4 mission team initially planned to launch on Tuesday but postponed it to Wednesday, June 11.
India, Poland, and Hungary are sending astronauts as part of the Ax-4 crew, marking the first time each country will have a representative aboard the ISS. Axiom Space confirmed that this mission marks India’s second government-sponsored human spaceflight in over four decades, highlighting the country’s renewed participation in international space exploration.

Axiom Space is launching its fourth private astronaut mission, marking a significant step in India’s expanding collaboration with NASA in the space sector. ISRO rescheduled the Axiom-4 mission to June 11, 2025, at 5:30 PM IST due to unfavorable weather conditions. ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan confirmed the delay through a post on X.
ESA astronaut Slawosz Uznanski, Poland’s second astronaut since 1978, and Tibor Kapu, Hungary’s second since 1980, will join Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on the Axiom-4 mission. Veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson will lead the mission as commander, completing her second commercial flight and further extending her record for the longest time spent in space by an American.
