That adds up to more than 912 billion requests per year, highlighting just how quickly the AI chatbot has integrated into everyday online use. Although it’s still well behind Google, which handles about 5 trillion searches annually, Chat GPT’s rapid rise raises the question: could it become a viable alternative down the line.

In December 2023, Open AI announced it had 300 million weekly users. Just three months later, that number surged past 500 million, with the majority relying on the free version of Chat GPT. According to a Reuters report earlier this month, the company is developing an AI-driven web browser aimed at challenging Google Chrome. Additionally, it has rolled out Chat GPT Agent, a tool designed to carry out tasks directly on users’ computers.

During his visit to Washington this week, Open AI CEO Sam Altman intends to emphasize how AI is enhancing human productivity. As reported by Axios, a source close to the matter said Altman aims to promote the idea of “democratizing benefits”—ensuring AI tools are accessible to the broader public rather than being dominated by a small elite. This message aligns with Altman’s earlier op-ed in The Washington Post, where he stressed the importance of the U.S. leading a democratic approach to AI before authoritarian powers gain the upper hand.
