External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on Monday, marking a significant step in efforts to enhance bilateral relations between India and China. This visit comes at a time when both nations are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
During his meeting with Han Zheng, Jaishankar noted the recent improvement in India-China relations and conveyed India’s support for China’s Presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Pleased to meet Vice President Han Zheng soon after my arrival in Beijing today and conveyed India’s support for China’s SCO Presidency. Noted the improvement in our bilateral ties and expressed confidence that discussions during my visit will maintain that positive trajectory.”

Referring to the leadership dialogue held last year, Jaishankar emphasized that bilateral relations have progressed since the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan. “Our bilateral relationship has been steadily improving,” he said, adding that his ongoing visit aims to sustain this momentum.

Highlighting symbolic developments in the relationship, Jaishankar pointed out the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which he said was “widely appreciated in India.”
The Indian Minister also addressed the broader international scenario, calling it “very complex” and emphasized the importance of open and constructive dialogue between India and China as neighboring nations and major economies.
Jaishankar’s current trip to China, his first in five years, follows his stop in Singapore. The visit holds significance as both sides aim to rebuild trust and cooperation amid ongoing global uncertainties and regional challenges.
