Tariff Tensions and Strained Relations Under Trump
The Trump administration triggered a deadlock in India-US trade talks by imposing cumulative 50 percent tariffs.
Former US officials Jake Sullivan and Kurt Campbell warned these actions created unprecedented discord in bilateral relations.
They argued that persistent tariffs, Russian oil purchases, and Pakistan tensions rapidly worsened mutual trust and engagement.
According to them, ignoring India’s value risks pushing New Delhi closer to China and Russia’s strategic influence.
Strategic Importance of India Amid Trump Policies
Sullivan and Campbell stressed India’s bipartisan support in Washington, discouraging reckless Chinese actions in the Indo-Pacific.
They highlighted that multiple American presidents advanced ties through nuclear, technology, and defence cooperation with Indian leaders.
The officials urged US partners to remind India that Trump’s theatrics often precede eventual dealmaking efforts.
They warned that without corrective steps, Washington risks losing India as a critical long-term global partner.
Reframing US-India Engagement
The officials advised the US to avoid hyphenating relations with India and Pakistan in diplomacy.
They noted America’s limited Pakistan interests pale compared to India’s larger geopolitical, economic, and technological significance.
They called for a new strategic alliance founded on five pillars of prosperity, security, and shared values.
This alliance, they suggested, should begin with a ten-year action plan on advanced technology collaborations.
