    ITR

The central government extended the Income Tax Return (ITR) filing deadline to September 16, 2025. The announcement was made late Monday night following widespread complaints about portal accessibility issues. Originally, the due date for ITR filing was September 15 for Assessment Year 2025-26. The Income Tax Department shared this update via its official X (formerly Twitter) account at 11:48 PM. The extension was granted to help taxpayers facing technical issues complete the process on time. Officials clarified that the earlier deadline was already extended once from July 31 to September 15. Many users reported login and browsing issues while attempting to access the I-T portal throughout the day. The update offered relief to last-minute filers concerned over possible penalties or incomplete submissions.

Department Shares Browser Fixes Amid Complaints from Taxpayers About Accessing Portal
Earlier on Monday, tax filers reported login failures and glitches while using the Income Tax portal. In response, the department posted troubleshooting steps to help resolve local system or browser errors. It advised users to update browsers, clear cookies, and ensure JavaScript and pop-ups were enabled. These quick fixes often solve accessibility problems stemming from incompatible settings or outdated system software. A step-by-step guide was posted publicly on X for wider accessibility and user convenience.
The guide aimed to reduce confusion among users struggling with last-minute technical barriers while filing. Despite sharing fixes, many taxpayers continued facing delays, triggering demands for deadline extension across social media.

Chartered accountants also flagged difficulties faced by clients trying to complete filings before the deadline. Recognizing the widespread nature of issues, authorities decided to grant a one-day extension late Monday. The department assured that technical teams were monitoring and supporting the portal’s performance in real-time. To implement technical changes, the e-filing portal entered maintenance mode from midnight to 2:30 AM. This planned downtime allowed updates in utilities, improving user experience and ensuring smoother extended access. The department advised users to avoid filing during that window due to backend enhancements and fixes.
