Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Jordan on Monday for his first full bilateral visit. This visit is the first stop of his three-nation tour, also including Ethiopia and Oman. He will meet King Abdullah II, who actively participates in Israel-Palestine peace efforts. The leaders are expected to discuss terrorism, regional stability, food security, and defence cooperation. Jordan has positioned itself as a moderate Islamic nation opposing extremism and radicalisation. Global terrorism challenges, including recent attacks, will likely feature in the discussions. India and Jordan aim to strengthen diplomatic and strategic ties through this engagement.

PM Modi Arrives in Jordan to Strengthen Bilateral and Strategic Ties
India is Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade worth $2.875 billion in 2023-24. India imports fertiliser and invests in Jordan’s phosphate and potash sectors to ensure food security. The Jordan India Fertilizer Company, a joint venture with IFFCO, invests $860 million in production. It produces phosphoric acid, a critical raw material, and exports it to India efficiently. Over 15 NRI-owned garment companies operate in Jordan’s Qualified Industrial Zones with $500 million investment. A 2018 MoU strengthened defence cooperation and strategic bilateral engagement between the two nations. The Indian community in Jordan numbers around 17,500, mainly in manufacturing, construction, and UN roles.
PM Modi will meet King Abdullah II on December 15 and 16 to strengthen bilateral ties. They will discuss terrorism, food security, Gaza peace, defence, and other regional cooperation initiatives. Jordan has consistently supported India’s fight against terrorism and condemned attacks on civilians. The talks aim to develop coordinated approaches to global terrorism and regional stability. India and Jordan have maintained strong diplomatic ties through multiple global forums and meetings. Officials expect outcomes in trade, security, and counter-terrorism cooperation from this visit. Both nations aim to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen strategic partnership through dialogue.

Economic and Strategic Relations Take Center Stage
PM Modi previously passed through Jordan in February 2018 while visiting the State of Palestine. The King accorded exceptional courtesies, making the transit visit historically significant for bilateral relations. This current visit marks India’s first full bilateral engagement with Jordan in 37 years. Since then, leaders met at UNGA, Future Investment Initiative, COP28, and the G7 Summit. The King also condemned India’s Pahalgam terror attack in 2025 and reiterated support for security. Both leaders discussed Gaza developments and mutual concerns regarding terrorism and violence over the phone. These interactions reinforced trust, respect, and India’s role in West Asia diplomacy.
India-Jordan economic and strategic relations continue expanding in trade, investment, and defence sectors. Indian companies actively contribute to fertiliser, phosphate, potash, and garment industries in Jordan. Discussions are expected to produce agreements addressing trade, defence, and food security needs. The Indian diaspora and people-to-people ties also benefit from sustained engagement between the nations.
