At least seven people died and many remain missing after a boat carrying about 200 migrants capsized off Gambia. The vessel overturned Wednesday midnight near Jinack village while migrants attempted to reach Europe. Authorities later found the boat grounded on a sandbank in the North Bank Region. The Rescuers saved ninety-six people, continued searching for other missing passengers from the vessel. The boat headed toward Spain’s Canary Islands through the increasingly dangerous Atlantic migration route.

The Gambian Navy launched a search-and-rescue operation using naval vessels and assisting fishing boats. Officials recovered seven bodies and confirmed several victims were non-Gambian nationals whose identities remain under verification. Ten rescued migrants remain in critical condition and are receiving urgent medical treatment.
Nearly forty-seven thousand migrants reached the Canary Islands in 2024, according to Spanish authorities. The non-government group Caminando Fronteras estimated over nine thousand migrants died attempting such dangerous crossings, while the European Union continues agreements to reduce irregular migration.
