Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday directed the BJP to immediately end its alliances with the Congress and the AIMIM in two municipal councils. He said the party would not accept such tie-ups under any circumstances.
Responding to developments in Ambernath and Akot ahead of the January 15 municipal council elections, Fadnavis said the BJP had already issued clear instructions. He warned that the party would investigate the matter and take disciplinary action against anyone who violated party orders.
In Ambernath, about 60 km from Mumbai, the BJP formed the Ambernath Vikas Aghadi to block the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena from gaining power. The alliance includes BJP members, Congress corporators, Ajit Pawar-led NCP representatives, and one Independent. The group named Abhijeet Gulabrao Karanjule-Patil as its leader and later secured the municipal chairman’s post.

Political rivalry in Thane district influenced the formation of the front, as both Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and Maharashtra BJP chief Ravindra Chavan belong to the region. To maintain control over the group leader’s post, the BJP moved quickly to register the alliance amid stiff competition with the Shiv Sena.
In Akot, located in Vidarbha’s Akola district, the BJP formed the Akot Vikas Manch by joining hands with the AIMIM, both factions of the Shiv Sena and NCP, and Bachchu Kadu’s Prahar Janshakti Party. The front holds a clear majority and plans to vote together in the upcoming polls, while the Congress and Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi will sit in the Opposition.
