Normal traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway resumed early Thursday after a 33-hour-long disruption that left thousands of commuters stranded. The traffic snarl began on Tuesday evening when a gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel in the Khandala Ghat section, triggering a complete halt on the Mumbai-bound carriageway.

Authorities safely emptied the overturned tanker of nearly 21 tonnes of propylene gas on Wednesday and shifted it on Thursday morning using heavy-duty cranes. Following safety clearance from gas company teams, officials restored traffic movement at around 1.46 am, bringing much-needed relief to commuters stuck for hours.
Tanker Removal Brings Relief to Stranded Commuters
The prolonged jam caused severe inconvenience, with vehicles lined up for nearly 20 km at its peak. Many passengers, including women and children, remained trapped in their vehicles without access to food, drinking water, or toilet facilities along the 90-km stretch between Mumbai and Pune.

Taking note of the scale of disruption, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the incident. He directed MSRDC officials to submit a detailed report along with recommendations to handle such emergencies more effectively in the future.
