Senior officials from the International Cricket Council, the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Pakistan Cricket Board and other member boards watched India surge to 175 in the first innings, even as Pakistan deployed an unprecedented volume of spin. Indian batters plundered 144 runs off 108 deliveries from the slower bowlers, flipping the script on what Pakistan had earmarked as their biggest weapon. On a surface expected to reward grip and control, India seized the initiative, used their feet confidently, manipulated angles and refused to allow the spinners to dictate terms.

Ishan Kishan Turns Spin Threat into Decisive Advantage

Ishan Kishan led India’s counterpunch and dismantled Pakistan’s spin stranglehold with a fearless approach. The left-hander hammered 66 runs off just 37 balls against spin during his electrifying 40-ball 77, blending calculated aggression with precise placement to repeatedly pierce the field. He took on both conventional and wrist spin with equal authority, disrupted lengths and forced Pakistan into defensive adjustments. In doing so, he produced the second-highest individual score against spin at the venue in a T20 World Cup match and turned a tactical challenge into a commanding advantage for India.

As the Group A clash progressed, the numbers underlined his impact. A social media post from Himanish Ganjoo, India’s former data analyst during their 2024 World Cup triumph, revealed that Ishan’s innings — which covered the first 52 balls of India’s knock — swung the win probability by nearly 30 per cent. Although Pakistan targeted him early with probing new-ball off-spin, aware of his relatively modest strike rate against that match-up, Ishan weathered tense moments, including a mistimed shot off Salman Agha and a thick inside edge off Shaheen Afridi that narrowly missed the stumps.

Ishan Kishan Dismantles Leg-Spin to Seize Control

Pakistan triggered the turning point when they introduced leg-spin in the powerplay, and Ishan Kishan seized the opportunity immediately. He attacked Abrar Ahmed with a six and a boundary in his first over and accelerated further once the fielding restrictions eased. Three successive fours off Abrar brought up a brisk half-century, and Shadab Khan suffered the same fate as Ishan punished anything in his arc. The two leg-spinners leaked 55 runs in four overs, with Ishan alone blasting 41 off 17 balls in a decisive burst that swung control firmly India’s way.

Ishan later added 25 off 20 deliveries against off-spin before Saim Ayub dismissed him in the ninth over, but he had already inflicted the damage. Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson praised his fearless strokeplay and his ability to score on both sides of the wicket, especially through the off-side — an area Ishan had consciously refined during his time away from the national side. He showcased that improvement in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hammering 517 runs at a strike rate of 197 for Jharkhand. After collecting the Player of the Match award, Ishan said he focused on finding gaps and rotating strike on a challenging surface, confident that 160–170 would prove a strong total.
