    Tarique Rahman

Tarique Rahman will take oath Tuesday as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, he led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party to a decisive election victory. Notably, the party won 209 of 297 seats. In comparison, Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats. However, authorities barred Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League from contesting.

Meanwhile, organizers will hold the ceremony at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad. Instead, they chose this venue over Bangabhaban, breaking tradition. Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath. Accordingly, state agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha confirmed the schedule. Finally, Secretary Kaniz Maula said the event will begin at 4:00 p.m.

Tarique Rahman Will Take Office as First Male PM in Decades

Tarique Rahman will become the first male Prime Minister of Bangladesh in decades, succeeding his mother Khaleda Zia, the country’s first female prime minister, who died in December 2025. His father, Ziaur Rahman, seized power in 1975 and later served as president until assassins killed him in 1981.

His party won the country’s first general election since the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, securing 209 of 297 elected seats. Later in the day at 4 p.m., President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath of office to the BNP chief and his Cabinet.

Tarique Rahman: BNP Won’t Take Second Oath

Tarique Rahman will assume office as Prime Minister after Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin swore in the new members of the Bangladesh Parliament on Tuesday (February 17, 2026) morning. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, unlike Jamaat-e-Islami, refused to take a second oath as members of the “Constitution Reform Commission,” saying that the Constitution does not yet include any provision for the council. Reports indicate that the entire parliament will serve as the “Constitution Reform Commission” for 180 days after the referendum delivered a majority ‘yes’ vote on February 12, 2026. Observers raised concerns about how MPs will balance their parliamentary duties with their responsibilities in the Constitution Reform Commission.
