    Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has been the backbone of Royal Challengers Bengaluru for nearly two decades, but the scene looked unusual during their clash with Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. While RCB batters attacked freely on a batting-friendly pitch, Kohli struggled to match the aggressive pace. His half-century came off 38 balls, which looked slow compared with the explosive scoring around him. The innings stood out because others dominated the bowling with fearless hitting.

RCB chose to bat first and understood that a huge total was necessary against Mumbai’s strong batting lineup. In modern T20 cricket, teams often chase big targets with ease. Because of that pressure, RCB batters focused on scoring quickly and building a total well beyond 200. Every run mattered as the team tried to stay ahead in the game.

Kohli’s slower fifty contrasts with RCB’s explosive batting against Mumbai Indians

Kohli’s approach felt slightly different from the modern T20 trend. Today, top-order batters aim to attack from the first ball and keep the strike rate extremely high. Dot balls create pressure because power hitters wait down the order to accelerate the scoring. This aggressive style has changed how teams build innings in the format.

Despite Kohli’s slower knock, RCB still posted a huge score of 240 runs. Phil Salt played a brilliant innings of 78 runs from 36 balls and smashed several sixes. Captain Rajat Patidar added a blazing 53 off just 20 deliveries, keeping the momentum strong. Tim David also chipped in with a quick cameo to boost the total.Kohli eventually reached his fifty in the 15th over but did not celebrate the milestone. Soon after, he mistimed a full toss from Hardik Pandya and got caught at long-on. The dismissal showed his frustration because he never looked fully comfortable at the crease. He walked back clearly disappointed with his performance.

The innings actually began positively for Kohli as he flicked a delivery from Trent Boult for a stylish six. However, the scoring slowed after the Powerplay when spinner Mitchell Santner controlled the run flow. Meanwhile, Salt and Patidar continued their aggressive hitting and dominated the Mumbai bowlers throughout the middle overs.

Many experts believe modern rules have increased pressure on batters to score faster. Kane Williamson recently explained that the Impact Player rule allows teams to bat deeper, which pushes top-order players to attack constantly. Kohli has adapted to these changes in recent years. Still, even the greatest players occasionally have a rare off day.
