Sonia Gandhi has raised serious concerns over the Centre’s decision to hold a special Parliament session from April 16 to 18. She said delimitation, not women’s reservation, is the real issue behind this move. According to her, the proposed plan could be dangerous and may even harm the Constitution.
In an article in The Hindu, she referred to reports about the government’s delimitation plans. She warned that these changes could affect political representation across the country. Such steps, she said, may disturb the balance and fairness protected by the Constitution.
The issue has come up again as the Women’s Reservation Bill, or Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, gains attention. The law, passed in 2023, gives 33% reservation to women in legislatures. Narendra Modi has asked political parties to support an amendment. This proposal aims to use the 2011 Census instead of waiting for 2027. It may allow early implementation before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Sonia Gandhi stressed that any increase in Lok Sabha seats must ensure fair representation. She said the process should not rely only on population numbers. Equal balance among states is also important.

Sonia Gandhi Raises Concerns Over Centre’s Plan
Sonia Gandhi has accused Narendra Modi of using the women’s reservation issue to delay the caste census. She said this move may help the government gain political advantage before upcoming elections. The timing of the special Parliament session has raised questions, especially as election campaigns continue in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
She said the government is acting in a hurry to control the political situation. This, she believes, puts pressure on the Opposition. She also criticised the Prime Minister’s way of working and said it lacks proper discussion. She questioned why the government took nearly 30 months to think about delimitation changes but is now making quick decisions.
While talking about the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, she explained that the law links women’s reservation to the next Census and delimitation. The Opposition had asked for immediate implementation earlier, but the government did not agree.
She also spoke about the delay in the Census, which was planned for 2021. According to her, this delay has affected welfare schemes like the National Food Security Act. She added that the government is showing urgency in delimitation but not in completing the Census work.
