Samrat Choudhary took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. With this, he became the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to head the state government. His appointment marks a major political change in Bihar.
The BJP and NDA Legislature Parties chose Samrat Choudhary as their leader on April 14, after days of discussion and speculation. Soon after this decision, Nitish Kumar resigned from the Chief Minister’s post. Nitish Kumar had served as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister. Recently, he moved to national politics and became a member of the Rajya Sabha.
After taking charge, Samrat Choudhary began his new role with strong support from the NDA alliance. Party leaders expressed confidence in his leadership and said he would focus on development and governance in the state. His appointment also reflects the BJP’s growing role in Bihar politics.
Along with the new Chief Minister, leaders from the alliance are also set to take important roles.
