Mamata Banerjee remained at the centre of the row. Kolkata Police dismissed unrest reports in the capital as “fake and misleading.” This came after she refused to resign following a heavy poll defeat.
Authorities reported limited post-poll violence across the state. A BJP worker, Madhu Mondal, died after alleged TMC supporters assaulted him during a victory procession in New Town, according to Press Trust of India.
In another incident, alleged BJP activists killed TMC worker Abir Sheikh in Nanoor, Birbhum, police said.
The Election Commission of India ordered Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, DGP Siddh Nath Gupta, and central forces to enforce zero tolerance against violence. The directive followed the killings. Miscreants also vandalised several party offices on Tuesday.
Mamata Banerjee row: Kolkata Police dismiss ‘fake’ unrest report
Kolkata Police flagged several viral social media claims as “FAKE.” Specifically, these posts alleged the Indian Army had entered Kolkata. They also claimed Mamata Banerjee was injured and that the Central Reserve Police Force attacked her residence. Additionally, some posts said TMC workers were victims, while BJP workers torched homes and shops.
Meanwhile, police said users shared misleading content. In fact, they linked unrelated videos and images to Kolkata after the election results. As a result, authorities are closely monitoring social media. They also warned of “strict legal action” against those spreading misinformation or disturbing public peace.
“The situation in Kolkata is fully under control. Therefore, citizens should not believe or share unverified posts,” the city police said.
Furthermore, in a separate update on Wednesday, Kolkata Police rejected a viral ‘advisory’ on law and order in Ripon Street, Janbazar, and nearby areas. Officials also called it “fake and misleading.” Overall, they said the situation across the city remains normal and under constant watch.

Mamata Banerjee rejects defeat, says she won’t step down
Mamata Banerjee refused to step down on Tuesday after her party’s assembly poll defeat, alleging that a “conspiracy,” not public mandate, led to the outcome.
She claimed authorities did not conduct the elections fairly and accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of interfering and misusing central forces to influence the polls.
Banerjee said the TMC would challenge the results and continue its political fight. “I will not resign. We lost not because of the people’s mandate but due to a conspiracy,” she said.
She added that her party “fought like tigers” and would bounce back, while expressing concern over what she described as direct interference by the government.
