The Supreme Court on Monday stressed the need for a fair and unbiased investigation into the death of former actor-model Twisha Sharma. The court supported the Madhya Pradesh government’s decision to recommend a CBI inquiry. It said an independent agency should handle the case to ensure transparency and public confidence.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant referred to media reports that questioned the fairness of the initial investigation. The court noted that Twisha’s husband is a practising lawyer and her mother-in-law is a retired district judge. These details raised concerns about possible influence on the probe. The judges said this perception led them to begin suo motu proceedings.
The Supreme Court praised the state government for deciding to transfer the case to the CBI. The bench said this move would remove doubts about the investigation. However, the judges also clarified that they trusted the state agencies and did not question their ability to investigate properly.

Twisha Sharma Case Sparks Nationwide Attention
The court urged both families and the media to avoid making public statements that could affect the inquiry. The judges said people should submit their claims and allegations directly to the investigating agency. During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta remarked that “a divorced daughter is better than a dead one”.
Twisha Sharma, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12. Her family accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. In response, the in-laws claimed that she struggled with drug addiction. The case attracted national attention because of the accused family’s background and concerns about the first post-mortem report. Following public protests, the Madhya Pradesh government agreed to hand the investigation over to the CBI.
