George Kurian has resigned as a Union Minister after the BJP denied him a fresh Rajya Sabha term. His six-year tenure in the Upper House ended this month. The decision also ended his ministerial role.
President Droupadi Murmu accepted the resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rashtrapati Bhavan announced the development in an official statement. Kurian represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha during his term.
The BJP announced its Rajya Sabha candidates on June 4. The party chose Tarun Chugh and Rajneesh Agrawal from Madhya Pradesh. George Kurian did not make the list. Party sources said the leadership did not alert him before the announcement. The decision came as a surprise to him.

Kurian joined the Union Cabinet in 2024. The BJP projected him as a key Christian face from Kerala. The move supported the party’s outreach efforts in the state. Kurian belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. The church holds significant influence in Kerala.
Kurian started his political journey with the BJP in 1980. He served in several important party roles. He worked as Kerala BJP general secretary. He also served as national secretary of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha. Later, he became a member of the BJP National Executive.
Many people know Kurian for translating speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah into Malayalam. He contested the 2016 Kerala Assembly election from Puthuppally. However, he lost to former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
George Kurian’s resignation closes an important chapter in his parliamentary career. Despite the setback, he remains a senior BJP leader in Kerala.
