German Chancellor Friedrich Merz touched down in Beijing on Wednesday, hoping to reset bilateral ties, as China projected itself as a reliable economic partner while Europe struggles to balance its alliance with the United States and address supply-chain vulnerabilities.
On his first visit to China, Merz joins a growing list of European leaders — including Britain’s Starmer and Canada’s Carney — who have sought to rebuild relations with Beijing this year. China, meanwhile, continues to highlight the advantages of engaging with its vast consumer market and advanced manufacturing base.

Merz arrived with a delegation representing 30 companies, including major automakers such as Volkswagen and BMW, which are increasingly feeling pressure from rising Chinese competition.
Ahead of the visit, Chinese state media underscored the potential for EU-China cooperation to act as a stabilising force at a time when U.S. tariff policies are disrupting global trade.
In an editorial published early Wednesday, Xinhua cited a German Chamber of Commerce survey indicating that innovation gains in China are feeding back into German headquarters.
