Hours before Pakistan agreed to play its February 15 T20 World Cup match against India, Pakistan Cricket Board chief Mohsin Naqvi sparked fresh controversy by invoking Field Marshal Asim Munir and asserting that neither he nor the government was intimidated by what he described as “threats” from India and the ICC. After weeks of drama marked by boycott threats and prolonged negotiations involving the Pakistan government, the ICC and several cricket boards, the PCB finally confirmed on Monday that it would take part in the match.

Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister, drew the military leadership into the debate, a move analysts view as an effort to frame a cricket dispute as a civil–military signal. Addressing a press conference on February 15 amid the stalemate, Naqvi said Pakistan remained firm and undeterred by pressure. He asserted that neither he nor the Pakistan government was intimidated by what he called threats from India and the ICC, adding that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir was known for never backing down in the face of pressure.

Why Mohsin Naqvi Invoked Asim Munir’s Name

Field Marshal Asim Munir has emerged as a key figure in Pakistan’s recent military history. In May 2025, Pakistan’s cabinet promoted General Munir to field marshal, the country’s highest military rank. He became only the second officer to hold the title after Ayub Khan. The promotion followed heightened border tensions with India after Operation Sindoor.

Islamabad approved the elevation after reviewing the conflict. Officials described the episode as a test of Pakistan’s defence resolve. The government highlighted Munir’s leadership during the 2025 India–Pakistan engagements. It presented his role domestically as a symbol of strength.

India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. Indian forces struck terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The targets included camps linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. New Delhi acted after a deadly terror attack in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir. The strikes led to four days of intense military exchanges. Both sides later agreed to pause hostilities.
