A lecture at Panjab University in Chandigarh sparked controversy on Monday after student groups objected to the presence of speakers linked to the BJP and the RSS. Protesters argued that universities should remain free from the promotion of any political organisation or ideology. The issue quickly drew attention across the campus. The situation escalated as more students joined the protest.
The university hosted a lecture titled “Sacrifice, equality and moral authority: Sikh history, Guru Tegh Bahadur and the Panj Pyare in the Indian civilisation ethos.” Organisers invited BJP parliamentary board member Iqbal Singh Lalpura to speak at the event. Banveer Singh, the RSS North Zone publicity chief, also participated in the lecture. The event focused on themes related to Sikh history and values.

University: Students object to BJP and RSS speakers invited for the campus event
Several student outfits opposed the programme and gathered to protest the event. They raised slogans and questioned the inclusion of speakers associated with political and ideological groups. The demonstration created tension in different parts of the campus. Students insisted that academic spaces should remain politically neutral.
University authorities monitored the growing protest and decided to seek help from the police. Soon after, a police team from the Sector-11 police station arrived at the campus. Officers attempted to control the situation as slogans continued near the venue. The presence of security personnel helped prevent the situation from escalating further.
Police later detained several students who continued shouting slogans against the RSS. Authorities placed the protesters in buses and took them to the Sector-11 police station. Officials said the step aimed to restore order on the campus. The incident ended after the police removed the protesting students from the area.
