CBSE awards marks for every correct step not only the final answer

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that students will receive marks for each correct step in Mathematics and Science during board examinations. The board said examiners focus on the method used by students while solving questions. Even if the final answer is not completely correct, students can still earn marks for the correct steps. This rule aims to ensure fair evaluation and recognise students’ understanding of concepts.

CBSE also stated that neat handwriting does not fetch extra marks in the exams. However, clear and well-organised answers help evaluators read responses easily and reduce confusion during checking. The board emphasised that examiners always award marks based on the correctness of the answer and the approach used by the student.

The board advised students to use only blue ballpoint pens while writing their answers. If students make mistakes, they should cross them out with a single line instead of using whiteners. CBSE warned that students should not write anything that reveals their identity in the answer sheet, as it may lead to action under unfair means rules.

CBSE is also introducing competency-based questions in line with the National Education Policy 2020. These questions test students’ application and understanding rather than rote learning. Currently, about 50 percent of the questions in Class 10 and Class 12 board exams follow this format. The board also releases sample papers and marking schemes to help students prepare effectively.
