Tamil Nadu Tasmac Shop Closures: 717 Liquor Shops Shut

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay took his first major administrative decision after assuming office and ordered the closure of 717 Tasmac liquor shops located near schools, religious places, and bus stands across the state. The government directed officials to shut these outlets within two weeks to reduce alcohol accessibility in sensitive public areas. Authorities identified the liquor shops operating within a 500-metre radius of temples, churches, mosques, schools, colleges, and transport hubs. The decision immediately attracted public attention because Tasmac remains one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest revenue-generating state-run corporations. Many parents, teachers, and social activists welcomed the move and described it as an important step toward public welfare and student safety. Tamil Nadu Government Targets Liquor Access Near Public Spaces

The Tamil Nadu government stated that officials identified 717 Tasmac outlets violating the new public safety guidelines. Among these shops, 276 operated near religious places, 186 functioned close to schools and colleges, and 255 stood near bus stands. Authorities instructed district administrations to supervise the closure process and complete the action within the fixed deadline. Government officials believe the decision will improve safety around educational institutions and reduce disturbances in crowded public areas.

Residents from several districts had repeatedly demanded the relocation of liquor shops operating near residential neighbourhoods and public facilities. Parents expressed concern over the increasing visibility of alcohol outlets near schools and colleges. Religious organisations also supported the government’s action and requested stricter monitoring of liquor sales near places of worship. Social activists claimed the closures would help reduce alcohol-related nuisance and improve the environment around public spaces.

Vijay Announces Welfare and Safety Measures

Apart from the liquor shop closures, Chief Minister Vijay announced several welfare-focused initiatives after taking oath. Officials also confirmed the establishment of anti-drug units in every district to tackle the growing drug-related issues in the state. The Chief Minister also promised strict action against criminal activities affecting women and vulnerable communities.
