US President Donald Trump, eyeing a Nobel Peace Prize, has been gathering photo-ops with leaders of conflict-hit nations. Just last week, he posed as a “peacemaker” by bringing Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s PM Nikol Pashinyan into one frame, and is now attempting the same with Putin and Zelenskyy in Alaska. But in June, PM Narendra Modi outmaneuvered Trump by steering clear of a similar photo-op with Pakistan’s Asim Munir.

Armenia and Azerbaijan, locked in conflict over the ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh since the 1980s, last reached a major agreement in November 2020 with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mediation, ending the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. For his Nobel Peace ambitions, Trump beamed in a photo alongside Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan, proudly holding the signed agreement, which he hailed as a historic step toward lasting stability in the region and a model for resolving other international disputes.
