United States President Donald Trump has rejected a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin to voluntarily extend limits on the deployment of strategic nuclear weapons after the New START treaty expired. Trump said Washington does not want a temporary extension of the old agreement.

Speaking on Thursday, Trump said the United States prefers negotiating a completely new treaty instead of reviving New START. He described the previous deal as poorly negotiated and claimed it had been repeatedly violated. Trump added that nuclear experts from both countries should work on a modern and long-lasting agreement.
Trump says old treaty flawed seeks broader talks on nuclear limits
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said a new treaty should replace New START rather than extend it. He also reiterated his interest in including China in future nuclear arms talks, though Beijing has shown little willingness to participate.
The expiration of the New START treaty removes key restrictions on the nuclear arsenals of both the United States and Russia. Analysts warn that the absence of limits could increase the risk of a renewed arms race at a time when global concerns over nuclear weapons are rising.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier said Moscow would continue following the treaty for another year if Washington agreed to do the same. However, the United States did not accept the offer. The Kremlin expressed regret over the treaty’s end but said Russia would continue to act responsibly while prioritizing its national interests.
