Xi Jinping’s Visit to India Holds Diplomatic Significance

Indian authorities have stepped up security across New Delhi ahead of the high-profile summit. Security agencies have increased surveillance around hotels in Chanakyapuri, where several visiting leaders will stay. Russian President Vladimir Putin will also visit India and is expected to arrive on September 11. Xi and Putin will reportedly land at the Air Force Station in Palam before travelling to their respective hotels in Chanakyapuri. Security teams from China and Russia have already reached the hotels to coordinate protection arrangements with Indian authorities.

The visiting security teams have brought advanced weapons and specialised security equipment to protect their respective presidents. Indian security personnel have deployed themselves across the hotels, including the floors where Xi and Putin will stay, as well as the rooftops and ground floors. Authorities are also closely monitoring the areas surrounding the hotels and other locations linked to the summit. These extensive security measures highlight the importance India places on protecting the visiting leaders and ensuring the smooth conduct of the BRICS meeting.

India Tightens Security Ahead of BRICS Summit

Xi’s visit also carries considerable diplomatic importance for India-China relations. Xi last travelled to India in 2019, when he met Modi for an informal summit in Mamallapuram near Chennai. He had earlier travelled to Goa in 2016 to attend the BRICS summit. Xi first visited India as Chinese president in September 2014, when he held detailed discussions with Modi. His upcoming trip will give the two leaders another opportunity to engage directly and address issues affecting relations between the two Asian powers.

India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 as the current chair of the grouping. The summit will take place against the backdrop of conflicts in West Asia and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, giving BRICS discussions greater international significance. Xi’s participation, along with Putin’s expected presence, will add considerable diplomatic weight to the meeting. India can use the summit to promote cooperation among member countries while addressing major global challenges. Xi’s visit could also help New Delhi and Beijing maintain their dialogue and continue efforts to stabilise bilateral ties.
