    Gurugram

Gurugram MP Rao Inderjit Singh blamed earlier development for the city’s recurring waterlogging problems. He said construction had blocked traditional drainage channels that once carried rainwater away. Singh described current measures as temporary solutions that provide relief but cannot solve flooding. He proposed underground tunnels to restore the natural flow of stormwater across Gurugram. He also said the government was arranging funds for the proposed drainage project.

Gurugram Waterlogging: MP Blames Congress-Era Development

Heavy rainfall recently brought several parts of Gurugram to a standstill and disrupted daily activities. The city recorded 75 millimetres of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm. Flooded roads stranded vehicles and school buses at several busy locations across the city. The administration later advised offices to allow employees to work from home. The rainfall once again exposed weaknesses in Gurugram’s drainage and road infrastructure.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala criticised the BJP government over the worsening situation. He alleged that Gurugram’s infrastructure had collapsed despite significant government spending. Surjewala highlighted flooded roads, stranded school buses and problems faced by residents. Congress leaders also questioned the government’s response to repeated waterlogging during monsoon rainfall. The political parties have now started blaming each other for Gurugram’s infrastructure problems.

Gurugram’s location in a natural basin makes the city vulnerable to flooding during heavy rainfall. Water from the surrounding Aravalli Hills naturally moves towards the city’s lower areas. Rapid urbanisation has reduced several traditional routes that previously carried rainwater away. Authorities have installed hundreds of rainwater harvesting systems across municipal corporation areas. However, these measures have failed to prevent severe waterlogging during intense rainfall.

A separate incident further raised concerns after a service lane near IFFCO Chowk collapsed. The damaged section created a large pit along the Delhi-Jaipur highway and alarmed nearby commuters. Officials said sewer line leakage contributed to the road damage and required immediate repairs. The NHAI will restore the road after authorities complete the sewer repair work. The latest incidents have increased pressure on authorities to develop permanent drainage solutions.
