On September 1, the SC was told by ECI that claims, objections and corrections in the draft electoral roll prepared in Bihar under the SIR exercise can be filed beyond September 1 but these would be considered once the electoral roll is finalised.The Supreme Court on Friday resumed hearings on a series of petitions, including those filed by political parties, challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) June 24 decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi took up the matter, seeking responses from the petitioners.

These groups have alleged that the EC’s decision could lead to irregularities and exclusion of genuine voters ahead of the crucial state elections. It informed the court that 99.5% of the 7.24 crore electors included in the draft rolls had already filed their eligibility documents, ensuring a high level of accuracy and inclusiveness in the process.
On September 1, the Supreme Court heard applications from political parties seeking an extension of deadlines in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The Election Commission informed the bench that voters could still file claims, objections, and corrections beyond the September 1 deadline. They urged the court to intervene to protect voters’ rights and prevent disenfranchisement.
