The Bharatiya Janata Party BJP recorded a sweeping and decisive victory across Gujarat’s urban local bodies by winning all 15 municipal corporations. The results of the 2026 municipal elections showed a strong consolidation of BJP’s influence in major cities. Voters across urban regions gave a clear mandate, strengthening the party’s dominance in local governance. Opposition parties failed to make meaningful gains in any of the municipal corporations. The outcome reinforced the BJP’s strong organisational presence and voter support across Gujarat’s cities.

BJP Dominates Gujarat Urban Elections
In Ahmedabad, the BJP delivered an overwhelming performance by securing a large majority of seats in the municipal corporation. The party won 146 out of 192 seats, leaving Congress far behind with only a small share. The ongoing counting in some wards still reflected BJP’s clear lead. This result highlighted continued voter confidence in the ruling party’s urban governance. The scale of victory in Ahmedabad marked one of the strongest performances in recent local elections.
In Surat, the Aam Aadmi Party faced a significant setback as it lost much of its earlier influence. The party, which had previously made gains in the city, managed to win only a handful of seats this time. BJP strengthened its position further and regained dominance in the key industrial city. The result reversed AAP’s earlier breakthrough and reshaped the local political landscape. Surat once again came under strong BJP control in municipal governance.

AAP Faces Major Setback in Surat and Opposition Weakens
Beyond the major cities, the BJP also performed strongly in taluka and district panchayat elections across Gujarat. The party expanded its reach in semi-urban and rural local bodies as well. Congress and AAP managed only limited pockets of support in certain rural regions. However, their overall presence remained weak compared to the ruling party. The combined results indicated a broad statewide advantage for BJP in local governance structures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the BJP workers for their grassroots efforts following the results. He stated that the victory reflected public trust in the party’s development-oriented governance model. Party leaders described the outcome as a strong endorsement of their “double engine” government approach. The results further strengthened BJP’s political position ahead of future elections. Overall, the municipal polls highlighted a clear and dominant mandate for the party across Gujarat.
