Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district during the intervening night of January 20 and 21, defence sources said. The brief skirmish occurred when troops of the 6 Rashtriya Rifles were installing high-tech surveillance cameras in the Keran Bala area as part of efforts to strengthen border monitoring and eliminate blind spots along the LoC.
According to sources, Pakistani troops fired two rounds of small arms in an apparent attempt to disrupt the installation process. Indian troops responded with a single, calibrated retaliatory shot, following established standard operating procedures. No casualties or damage were reported on either side during the exchange of fire.
Following the incident, the Indian Army launched a cordon and search operation in the surrounding dense forest terrain. Security agencies suspect the firing may have been intended to divert attention and facilitate a possible infiltration attempt from across the border. Troops intensified area domination and increased vigilance along known infiltration routes in the sector.

Pakistani firing disrupts surveillance work: no casualties reported
Army officials said security forces have tightened surveillance across the Keran sector, which has historically remained a sensitive zone due to its proximity to traditional infiltration corridors used by militants. The Army has been progressively upgrading its technical surveillance network, including the deployment of advanced cameras, sensors, and night-vision equipment, particularly during the winter months when snow cover reduces movement in higher reaches.
Defence sources added that the installation of high-resolution surveillance systems aims to improve real-time monitoring and enhance the Army’s ability to detect suspicious movement along the LoC. These measures form part of a broader strategy to strengthen border management and prevent cross-border infiltration attempts.
The situation along the LoC remains under close watch, and troops continue to maintain a high state of alert. Senior officers are regularly reviewing ground conditions and security arrangements to ensure preparedness. Officials reiterated that the Indian Army remains committed to maintaining peace along the LoC while responding firmly to any provocation.
