30 killed in Pak-Afghan border clashes amid ‘open war’ warning

Pakistan’s military reported on Sunday that five of its soldiers and 25 militants were killed in fierce clashes along the Afghanistan border. The violence erupted even as Pakistani and Afghan delegations met in Istanbul to ease rising tensions after a series of earlier confrontations. According to the military, armed militants tried to infiltrate Pakistan’s Kurram and North Waziristan districts from Afghanistan on Friday and Saturday. The military’s media wing told Reuters that these repeated infiltrations cast serious doubts on the Afghan government’s commitment to curbing terrorism from its territory. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that the ceasefire was still in place and expressed hope that Afghanistan sought peace. However, he warned that if both sides failed to reach an agreement in Istanbul, it could lead to an “open war.”

    Peace talks underway in Istanbul

Officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan are meeting in Istanbul to establish the “mechanisms” for maintaining stability outlined during the Doha talks. The recent confrontation, which left dozens dead including civilians, was the worst along the border since the Taliban’s 2021 takeover of Kabul. It began after explosions in central Kabul, which the Taliban government attributed to Pakistan, leading to retaliatory strikes along the frontier. Both sides eventually agreed to a truce in Doha last Sunday
