    Kanishka

Bihar-born Kanishka Narayan has been appointed as the United Kingdom’s new Minister for Artificial Intelligence, marking a significant milestone in his political career. The appointment gives him a seat at the Cabinet table just two years after he entered the British Parliament. His elevation comes as the UK government strengthens its focus on artificial intelligence to remain globally competitive in emerging technologies. Following a major Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the government reorganized its technology portfolio by merging responsibilities across departments. Narayan will now oversee AI policy through the Cabinet Office and the expanded Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade. Soon after his appointment, he emphasized the importance of the current moment for AI development, stating that nations have only a limited opportunity to shape the future of artificial intelligence before technological leadership shifts elsewhere.

From Muzaffarpur to Westminster: Kanishka Narayan’s Remarkable Journey

Kanishka Narayan was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, in November 1989 before his family moved to Delhi and later settled in Cardiff, Wales. He has often shared how his parents worked night shifts and minimum-wage jobs after relocating to the United Kingdom. Those experiences shaped his views on equal opportunity, education, and social mobility. Narayan attended a state-funded school in Cardiff before earning a scholarship to the prestigious Eton College. He later studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Balliol College, University of Oxford, and completed an MBA at Stanford University in the United States. His academic achievements and multicultural upbringing helped prepare him for leadership roles in both public service and business. Today, his journey from Bihar to one of Britain’s most influential technology positions serves as an inspiring example of determination, education, and professional excellence.

Before entering politics, Narayan built an impressive career across finance, venture capital, and government policy. He worked with global investment bank Lazard, advising corporate boards, government finance ministries, and technology entrepreneurs throughout Europe and the United States. His work focused on emerging sectors including artificial intelligence, fintech, and climate technology. He later joined venture capital firms Atomico and Clocktower Ventures, where he supported technology startups and investment strategies. Narayan also served as an economist and senior adviser within the UK government, working alongside Cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister’s Office. During this period, he contributed to the development of Britain’s long-term environmental strategy and public policy initiatives. His experience across government and private industry provided him with strong expertise in technology, innovation, and economic policy, making him a natural choice to lead the country’s growing AI agenda.

New UK AI Minister to Lead Britain’s Artificial Intelligence and Technology Strategy

Narayan entered Parliament after winning the Vale of Glamorgan constituency for the Labour Party during the 2024 UK General Election, becoming Wales’ first ethnic minority Member of Parliament. His political rise has been remarkably rapid. In 2025, he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for AI and Online Safety, where he announced major investments supporting Britain’s technology sector. These included hundreds of millions of pounds for AI chip manufacturing, semiconductor development, and cloud computing infrastructure. He also oversees the UK’s AI Security Institute, which evaluates advanced AI systems and develops safety standards for emerging technologies. Narayan has consistently described artificial intelligence as one of the most transformative innovations in human history while acknowledging concerns about workforce changes and responsible AI regulation. His leadership has focused on balancing innovation with public safety and long-term economic growth.

Narayan has also played an important role in strengthening technology cooperation between the United Kingdom and India. Earlier this year, he co-led a British delegation to the India AI Impact Summit and met with India’s Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, to discuss collaboration in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. During the visit, he praised India’s innovation ecosystem and described Bengaluru as one of the world’s leading technology hubs. He emphasized that both countries share common democratic values and ambitious technology goals that could drive deeper cooperation. As Britain’s new AI Minister with Cabinet-level responsibilities, Narayan will now help shape national policies on AI regulation, semiconductor investment, digital infrastructure, and responsible technology adoption. His appointment reflects the UK’s growing commitment to maintaining global leadership in artificial intelligence and advanced innovation.
