    Nitish

Nitish Kumar, JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister, took oath as a Rajya Sabha member on Friday, April 10, nearly a month after winning election to the Upper House on March 16. Although he has not stepped down as CM yet, his oath signals a possible leadership change in Bihar. Under constitutional provisions, he can continue as Chief Minister for up to six months after becoming an MP. However, he resigned as an MLC on March 30, complying with the rule that requires him to do so within 14 days of election to Parliament.

A political transition now appears underway in Bihar as Nitish Kumar shifts from Patna to Parliament in Delhi. ANI reported that senior BJP leaders are holding a key meeting in the capital to chart the roadmap for new state leadership. BJP national president Nitin Nabin said the NDA has no differences over the next Chief Minister, while senior minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary confirmed that Nitish will first assume his Rajya Sabha role and is likely to resign as Bihar CM within two to four days after returning to Patna following discussions.

Nitish to take Rajya Sabha oath, likely to resign as Bihar CM within days

Senior minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary said Nitish Kumar will take oath as a Rajya Sabha member before returning to Patna and plans to resign as Bihar Chief Minister within 2–4 days after discussions. He added that the NDA will follow its legislative procedures to select the new Chief Minister. Nitish, Bihar’s longest-serving CM, began his political career as an MLA in 1985, later served as a Union Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, and first took office as Chief Minister in 2005.

Speaking to ANI in Delhi, Saraogi described the day as significant for both Bihar and Nitish Kumar, calling him a mass leader who drove development in the state. He said Nitish ended the RJD’s “jungle raj” and led Bihar’s progress. Saraogi also expressed confidence that the political transition will remain smooth and said the NDA will continue to prioritise development and stability in the state.
