Trump later responded to comments about America being in decline through a lengthy post on Truth Social. He claimed Xi’s remarks were not aimed at the current administration but at former President Joe Biden and his government. Trump argued that the US had suffered economically and politically during Biden’s four years in office.

The US President said America had changed dramatically under his leadership over the past sixteen months. He highlighted strong stock market growth, rising investments, military power and job creation as proof that the country had regained global influence. Trump insisted the United States was now stronger and more respected internationally.

During the summit, Xi also spoke about “great changes unseen in a century,” suggesting that the global order dominated by the United States after World War II was shifting. His remarks reflected China’s growing confidence as it expands its influence in world politics and international trade. Analysts viewed the statement as a signal of intensifying competition between Washington and Beijing.

Trump claimed Xi congratulated him on several achievements of his administration during their meetings in Beijing. He used the summit to project an image of American revival and repeatedly contrasted his presidency with Biden’s tenure. The White House later amplified Trump’s statements by reposting his comments and criticism of the previous administration.

Experts believe Xi’s reference to the “Thucydides Trap” highlighted concerns over long-term conflict between rising and established powers. The phrase comes from ancient Greek historian Thucydides, whose writings inspired modern geopolitical theory. The concept has become central to debates about the future relationship between China and the United States.
