Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply worsened in recent months, with most land border crossings largely shut since deadly clashes in October killed more than 70 people on both sides. The growing hostility has now taken a serious military turn.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan bombs Kabul in a major escalation on Friday (Feb 27), with Islamabad’s defence minister declaring the situation an “open war” after months of tit-for-tat clashes between the two neighbours.

AFP journalists in Kabul and Kandahar reported hearing powerful explosions and fighter jets overhead as Pakistani forces carried out airstrikes on the Afghan capital and Kandahar, a key Taliban stronghold. The development marks one of the most serious spikes in cross-border tensions in recent times.

Pakistan bombs Kabul as tensions with Taliban government rise

The latest military action came after Afghan forces allegedly attacked Pakistani border troops late Thursday night, which Islamabad described as retaliation for earlier strikes. The continuing cycle of attacks has raised fears of a broader regional conflict.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities of failing to act against militant groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan. However, the Taliban government has strongly denied these claims and maintains that Afghan soil is not being used against any country.

Multiple rounds of negotiations, including a ceasefire reportedly brokered by Qatar and Turkey, have failed to deliver a lasting breakthrough. Both sides have reported significant military casualties in the latest border violence.
