Millions of people spend their days confined to desks, and experts continue to warn that prolonged sitting acts as a “silent killer.” Addressing these risks, a UK-based nutritionist has highlighted a simple morning habit that can help reduce some of the heart-related damage caused by long hours of sedentary work. On January 8, England-based nutrition expert Zib Atkins shared a science-backed tip on Instagram aimed at office workers: add high-quality organic cocoa to your daily routine to support cardiovascular health.

Zib emphasised that sitting all day does more than cause muscle stiffness or back pain. It directly harms the circulatory system. He stated that prolonged sedentary behaviour increases the risk of heart disease by about 30 percent and raises overall mortality risk by 20 percent. He explained that one of the first areas affected is the endothelium the delicate lining of the heart and blood vessels which can begin to malfunction, leading to inflammation and reduced oxygen supply to vital organs.

Simple Morning Habit to Boost Heart Health

“Sitting all day isn’t harmless,” he said, stressing that poor blood vessel function raises inflammation, reduces oxygen delivery, and significantly increases cardiovascular risk. He explained that over time, impaired vascular function leads to high blood pressure, arterial stiffness, and plaque buildup in the arteries — all major risk factors for heart attacks and strokes. He also emphasised that even people who exercise regularly cannot fully offset the damage if they remain inactive for most of the day. According to him, people can lower these long-term risks by taking small, consistent steps to support vascular health, such as improving their diet and incorporating regular movement breaks into their routine.

Cacao Boost Backed by Research for Better Heart Health

He explained that consuming around 150 mg of flavanols — roughly 1.5 tablespoons of high-quality, unsweetened cacao — delivers the desired benefits. He advised people to simply stir the powder into their morning coffee or tea. Zib emphasised that clinical research supports this recommendation and that it goes beyond a passing social media wellness trend.

He also referred to a recent human study in which researchers asked participants to sit for six consecutive hours, simulating a typical office workday. Researchers observed a significant decline in blood vessel function in the group that did not consume cocoa. However, participants who drank a flavonoid-rich cocoa beverage beforehand maintained healthy vascular function. The results showed that cocoa effectively preserved endothelial function throughout the entire six-hour sitting period.
