Ukraine patrol police chief Yevhen Zhukov has stepped down following a deadly shooting incident in Kyiv that killed six people and injured 14 others. The attacker opened fire on civilians in the Holosiivskyi district and later took hostages inside a supermarket before being killed in a police shoot-out.
Controversy arose after videos surfaced online allegedly showing two police officers fleeing the scene instead of helping civilians. Interior Minister Igor Klymenko confirmed the officers had been suspended and an investigation into their conduct was underway, stressing that police must uphold their duty, especially in critical moments.
Zhukov admitted the officers failed to properly assess the situation and acted unprofessionally, leaving civilians at risk. Taking responsibility, he announced his resignation. President Volodymyr Zelensky also criticized the officers’ inaction and ordered a criminal investigation into the case.

Authorities have classified the shooting as a terrorist act, though the motive remains unclear. Officials suggested the attacker appeared mentally unstable. Eight victims are still hospitalized, with some reported to be in serious condition.
The gunman, a 58-year-old originally from Moscow, had been living in Kyiv prior to the attack. His weapon was legally registered, and authorities are now investigating how he obtained and renewed his license. Such shootings are rare in Kyiv, especially amid the ongoing war conditions.
