The Delhi High Court has directed authorities to closely monitor the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. The court instructed officials to provide immediate medical assistance whenever necessary to protect his life. While hearing the matter, the bench stressed that every citizen’s life is valuable and said authorities must make every possible effort to ensure his well-being. The order came amid growing concerns over Wangchuk’s deteriorating health.

The court issued its directions after a petition claimed that the 59-year-old activist had lost nearly 8.5 kilograms during his fast. The plea warned that his condition had become critical and urged immediate medical intervention. It also requested that Wangchuk be shifted to a government hospital and provided essential nutrients and medical care if required. The petition described the situation as urgent and called for timely action to prevent further health complications.

During the hearing, the High Court questioned the government about the medical supervision being provided to Wangchuk. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that health check-ups were taking place regularly, although private doctors sometimes conducted the examinations. The court directed that government doctors should carry out daily medical assessments and submit reports. It also instructed authorities to provide treatment or medication without delay whenever the medical reports indicate a need.

The petition also highlighted that peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right guaranteed to citizens. However, it argued that Wangchuk’s worsening health required immediate attention and that any delay could have serious consequences. The court acknowledged the importance of safeguarding the life of every individual while ensuring that constitutional rights remain protected. It reiterated that preserving human life should remain the highest priority.

Despite concerns over his health, Sonam Wangchuk has refused to end his hunger strike. In a video message shared before the court’s order, he said his condition remained stable for someone observing a prolonged fast, although he admitted experiencing weakness and muscle fatigue. He appealed to supporters to join the planned protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20 instead of urging him to end the strike. Wangchuk said a strong public response would send a meaningful message to the government.
