Priyanka Gandhi Questions Hockey India’s Saffron Jersey, Says It Reflects Government’s Real Intentions

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised Hockey India’s decision to introduce a saffron jersey for the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams. Speaking during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, she alleged that the jersey change reflects a broader attempt to rewrite the country’s history. She said India’s identity is built on the values of truth, non-violence, unity and brotherhood. According to her, these principles remain the foundation of the nation and cannot be altered through symbolic changes.

Priyanka Gandhi Links Jersey Change To Larger Political Narrative

Priyanka Gandhi also linked the jersey controversy to other government policies, including changes in the education system. She claimed that attempts to change national symbols and historical narratives reveal the government’s intentions. Referring to recent public protests, she said many young people have voiced concerns over such decisions. She further stated that India’s freedom movement was led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress, while asserting that the country’s core values would continue to remain strong despite political differences.

The controversy began after Hockey India unveiled the new jerseys for the senior men’s and women’s teams on July 27 ahead of the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cups. The saffron jersey quickly became the centre of political discussion. Former Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha also reacted to the change and described the new jersey as “embarrassing.” His remarks added further attention to the debate surrounding the team’s new appearance.

Hockey India Defends Design And Colour Choice

Hockey India defended its decision by explaining that the jersey was designed after discussions with players and support staff. The federation said the saffron colour represents courage, sacrifice and victory while reflecting India’s pride. Officials also pointed out that the previous blue jersey often blended with the blue synthetic hockey turf used in international competitions. According to Hockey India, the colour change improves on-field visibility and helps players perform better during matches.

The jersey row has triggered a wider political debate, with leaders and sports personalities expressing differing opinions. While critics view the change as politically motivated, Hockey India maintains that the decision was based on symbolism and practical sporting considerations. As discussions continue, the new jersey has become one of the most talked-about topics ahead of India’s participation in the upcoming international hockey tournaments.
