India is making big moves to transform public transport with futuristic projects like flying buses and super-modern electric buses to tackle the growing traffic problem, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. These innovative steps are aimed at reducing congestion and making daily commuting smoother and faster.
In a chat with ANI, Mr. Gadkari mentioned that the government is planning to link Dhaula Kuan to Manesar using an aerial pod system. This idea comes as a solution to the heavy traffic flow on that busy stretch, offering an alternative transport route up in the air.
Nitin Gadkari Shares Plans for Flying Buses in Delhi
In India, the idea of flying buses mostly points to aerial pod-based transport systems, also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). These are tiny, driverless electric vehicles that travel on raised tracks — either hanging below the rails or running on top. They work kinda like private cabs on demand. You can call for a pod, and it’ll take you directly to your stop without making unnecessary halts. Each pod usually fits about two to six passengers.
Mr. Gadkari revealed that the ministry is also working on a cool double-decker cable car-like system to connect mountain regions in states like Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir. The goal is to make public transport smarter, faster, and more convenient for everyone.
He also mentioned a high-capacity electric bus project in Nagpur. This 135-seater electric bus comes with flash-charging tech, runs along the city’s ring road, and offers executive-class seating with TVs. The bus can hit a top speed of 120 kmph and will make quick 40 km stops where passengers can hop on and off in just 30 seconds — and the bus will charge itself during that time too.
