Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Meta India over the alleged presence of Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) on its platforms. The police took this action following directions from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This marks the first FIR against Meta India in a case involving such content. The development comes months after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologised over the issue. The case has once again raised concerns about child safety on social media platforms.

Delhi Police Begins Investigation Following NHRC Directions

NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo announced the development through a post on X. He confirmed that Delhi Police had registered an FIR following the commission’s directions. According to the police, its Special Cell registered FIR No. 236/2026 on October 8, 2026. The case falls under Sections 67 and 67B of the Information Technology Act. The police initiated the investigation after receiving a complaint about suspected child abuse material circulating through Meta platforms.

Delhi Police reportedly received information about approximately ten links containing suspected child sexual abuse material. Authorities have started examining these links to verify the allegations. The investigation aims to establish how such content appeared and circulated on Meta’s platforms. The FIR marks a significant step in the authorities’ action against online child exploitation. However, the police have not yet announced any final findings in the case.

NCPCR Had Earlier Summoned Meta Executives

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had also taken up the matter earlier. On July 3, the commission sent a notice to Meta seeking an explanation about advertisements linked to CSEAM. Meta submitted its response around a week later. However, the commission decided to launch a formal inquiry to establish the facts. On September 16, the NCPCR summoned Meta India’s Managing Director and Head in connection with the investigation.

The NCPCR’s continued follow-up reportedly pushed Meta to revise its child abuse reporting policy in India. Earlier, the company routed such reports through agencies in the United States. Meta has now started reporting these cases directly to the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). The change aims to improve coordination with Indian authorities. The latest FIR has further increased scrutiny of Meta’s responsibility for preventing child exploitation across its platforms.
