    Mumbai has experienced continuous heavy rains since Saturday night, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more downpours with thunderstorms on Monday. The IMD issued red and orange alerts for multiple districts across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, warning residents of severe weather conditions.

    Palghar on red alert

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, and Pune under a red alert on September 29, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds from 6:32 am onward.The IMD also issued an orange alert for Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Bhandara, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Sindhudurg, warning of very heavy rainfall, lightning, and squalls throughout the day.

    Meanwhile, the remaining districts — Gondia, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Chandrapur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Amravati, Akola, Buldhana, Jalna, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, Nanded, Hingoli, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Osmanabad, Solapur, Sangli, and Kolhapur — came under a yellow alert. Raising the concern further, the IMD issued a red alert specifically for Palghar district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places and the likelihood of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas on September 29. The forecast sparked worries over potential flooding and waterlogging across the district.

    Mumbai Rain wreaks havoc in Maharashtra

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rainfall across all districts of Maharashtra till October 3. According to the district-wise forecast, Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, and the ghats of Kolhapur will receive intense showers with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 40 kmph till Friday. In the last 24 hours, heavy rainfall has claimed five lives in Maharashtra.

    Officials confirmed two deaths in Ahilyanagar, while Nashik, Jalna, and Yavatmal each reported one fatality. Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Konkan, parts of North Maharashtra, western Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha remain the worst affected. Continuous downpours have triggered flooding, forcing the administration to evacuate over 11,000 people to safer locations by Sunday evening.
