A senior tech professional shared a frustrating hiring experience after he cleared several interview rounds at a high-paying company, only for the firm to reject him at the final stage for an unexpected reason. In a post on X, IIT graduate Pulkit Mittal said he cleared all five interview rounds for a role at a company offering a ₹1.5-crore package. However, the company later told him that it did not consider his previous employer a “Tier-1” firm. Mittal said the reason surprised him because he had already completed the entire interview process successfully.

Mittal added that after finishing the interview rounds, he moved to the reference check stage, which companies usually conduct just before making an offer. However, the process soon took an unusual turn when the HR team asked him to share contact details of his current manager, skip manager, and three colleagues. He also said the company asked him to provide proof that graduates from the Indian Institutes of Technology had previously worked at his company.

Techie Says Company Asked for IIT–FAANG Proof

Mittal said the requests did not stop there. In his post, he claimed the company also asked him to provide proof that alumni from his college had gone on to work at major tech firms, commonly known as FAANG companies. He further said the HR team asked him to share screenshots of several work-related details from his current job, including performance reviews, the number of pull requests (PRs) he had submitted, and task counts from project management tools such as Jira.

Despite providing all the requested information during the reference check stage, Mittal said the company eventually rejected him. He added that the firm cited one of his previous employers, saying it did not consider the company “Tier 1” enough. HT.com has reached out to Mittal for more details and will update the report when he responds.
